Legion Lake Trail
The Legion Lake Trail is often confused with the Legion Lake Shore Trail. Though the trail is accessed from back end of the Legion Lake Campground, there is no view of the lake anywhere from the route and might make one wonder why a different name was not given to this particular hiking route. The Custer State Park Trails Guide list this loop route as 1 mile, but in truth is probably actually closer to 1.3 miles long. This trail is rated as moderate to strenuous, with the most difficult section near the high point of the trail. For anyone who chooses to hike this trail, it is important to keep a sharp eye for the blue diamond trail markers. The trail is somewhat faint in the rockiest areas in the upper section. A hike on a mild sunny day creates some awesome fragrances in the pine and spruce trees in the forest, and the quiet solitude only enhances that. This high point on this loop has a small rocky outcropping that offers a limited view of Mount Coolidge to the southwest. The suggested route on this loop is counter-clockwise, so the last section of the trail shares pathway with the Centennial Trail. Custer State Park offers a downloadable pdf trail guide.
