The Deerfield Trail
The Deerfield Trail (Trail 40) is a 23-mile route from Deerfield Reservoir to the Pactola Lake area, and includes a loop trail (Trail 40L) around Deerfield Lake. The surface and grade varies quite a bit along the Deerfield Trail and loop trail, with some sections along Deerfield Lake, Rapid Creek and Slate Creek that could be said to be easy to moderate. Other sections of the trail are rated as difficult. The lowest elevation along the trail is about 4,600 feet, while the highest elevation is around 6,200 feet. Trail 40 trailheads are Deer Creek, Silver City, Kinney Canyon and Daugherty. The trailheads for the Deerfield Lake Loop Trail (40L) are Gold Run, Custer Trails and North Shore. The scenery along the whole trail provides great photo ops. The route takes hikers past old mines, flumes, cabins, railroad beds and bridges.
