The Mickelson Trail
One of the most popular trails in the Black Hills is the 109-mile Mickelson Trail, designated as Trail #104. The trail runs from Deadwood in the north to Edgemont at the southern end of the Black Hills. Popular not only with hikers, but also runners, bicyclists and equestrians, the trail follows the old route of the Deadwood to Edgemont Burlington Northern railroad line. The trail still uses the old railroad bridges and tunnels, traversing through canyons, meadows and valleys past old mines, railroad stations and abandoned cabins. The trail surface is mostly crushed limestone and is built over the old railroad bed. Therefore, the grades are gentle enough that anyone can enjoy an outing on almost any portion of the trail. There are numerous trailheads along the route, where hikers can purchase a daily trail pass. Season passes are also available. Most trailheads have parking lots and toilets. There are some restrictions on the Mickelson Trail, including use limited to daylight hours only, dogs required to be on a short leash at all times, no smoking on the trail, no camping or campfires along the trail and no motorized vehicles on the trail. Rattlesnakes can be seen on the trail at lower elevations, while ticks and poison ivy can be found in the ditches along the trail.
