Badger Clark Historic Trail
The Badger Clark Historic Trail is a beautiful little loop trail in Custer State Park to the south of Legion Lake. The trailhead is 1 mile south of Highway 16 on the Badger Clark Road, about 7 miles east of the town of Custer. Part of the trail was created by the famed Badger Clark himself and is located near his former home, a small cabin where he lived for many years. The cabin was dubbed “The Badger Hole”. The 1-mile loop trail is rated by the state park as moderate. The pathway is pretty smooth in most places except at the highpoint of the loop, where it crosses a small hill. That short section of the trail is pretty rocky. There is a small stream in front of the Badger Hole, but most of the trail is through thick forest, consisting most of pine with some oaks mixed in at the lower side of the loop. In-season, tours are available through the Badger Hole, with friendly volunteer rangers on hand to answer questions. More information and a map are available in the Custer State Park Trails Guide.
